Phuket is the easiest destination in Thailand to sell to a non-golfer, and that is exactly why it works. The golf is genuinely good — Blue Canyon has hosted the Johnnie Walker Classic — but the island would be a proper holiday even if there were no courses on it at all.

Why Phuket works for a couple

The case for Phuket is what happens on the days you are not playing: island trips to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay, the Sino-Portuguese streets of Old Phuket Town, some of the best spa treatments in Asia, and beaches that range from busy to genuinely quiet within half an hour of each other.

It is the most expensive Thai golf region on our published figures, so it is the wrong choice if the budget is tight — but the right one if the trip needs to feel like a holiday first and a golf trip second.

What to do on the days off

Islands: Phi Phi, the Similans and Phang Nga Bay all run as day trips. Book these first — boat departures are far less flexible than tee times.
Old Phuket Town: Sino-Portuguese shophouses, good coffee and the Sunday walking street. An easy afternoon while the golfer sleeps off a round.
Spas: among the best in Asia, and a whole-day spa journey is a genuine alternative to a day's golf rather than a consolation prize.
Beaches: Bang Tao and Kamala for calm, Patong if you want noise, Nai Harn and Kata for somewhere in between.

Where to stay

Where to base yourselves: Bang Tao or Laguna if golf is a priority — you are close to Blue Canyon and Laguna Golf, and the beach is on your doorstep. Kata or Nai Harn for a quieter, prettier stretch of coast with a longer drive to the northern courses. Patong only if nightlife matters more than sleep.

Is Phuket good if only one of us plays golf?

Yes. Thai golf finishes early — a round starting at six or seven is done by early afternoon — so the days are still shared. Phuket has enough away from the course to fill the mornings, and plenty for the afternoons you spend together.

How many rounds should we book in Phuket?

Three or four over ten nights if one of you does not play, or four to five if you both do. Golf every other morning keeps it a holiday rather than a golf tour with a companion attached.

Can a non-golfer ride along in the cart?

At most Thai courses, yes — but nearly all charge a cart or follower fee for it, and some add a caddie charge too. Ask when you book. Plenty of partners prefer the clubhouse and the spa to five hours in the heat, so do not assume it is wanted.

What does a couples golf trip to Phuket cost?

For ten nights with four rounds for one golfer, roughly £1,400 to £2,600 per person excluding flights, depending on hotel standard. Green fees average ฿2,320 in low season and ฿3,249 in high season, plus a compulsory caddie around ฿450 a round and a cash tip of ฿400 to ฿500.
