Khao Yai is the short escape rather than the two-week holiday — two hours from Bangkok, up into the hills, where it is cooler, greener and quieter. It is Thailand's wine country, it has one of the country's great national parks on its doorstep, and the golf is better than the destination is known for.

Why Khao Yai works for a couple

For a couple it is an unusually easy sell, because the non-golf half of the trip is genuinely distinctive rather than a beach you could find anywhere. Vineyards do tours, tastings and long lunches. Khao Yai National Park is one of the best places in the world to see wild elephants. And the altitude means evenings are cool enough to sit outside comfortably.

What to do on the days off

Vineyards: Khao Yai is one of Thailand's two wine regions. Tours, tastings and Italian-style lunches — often described, not unreasonably, as Thailand's little slice of Tuscany.
Khao Yai National Park: waterfalls, walking trails and genuinely wild elephants. A full day, and worth it.
Stargazing: far enough from Bangkok that the sky is properly dark.
The theme-park end of Khao Yai — Italian villages, alpaca farms and the rest — is enormously popular with Thai visitors and either charming or baffling depending on your mood.

Where to stay

Where to base yourselves: Kirimaya if you want golf, spa and national-park views at one address — it is the obvious couples choice. The Pak Chong side has the vineyards and the wider choice of boutique places. Two hours from Bangkok by car, so it also works as a two or three-night add-on either side of a city stay.

Is Khao Yai good if only one of us plays golf?

Yes. Thai golf finishes early — a round starting at six or seven is done by early afternoon — so the days are still shared. Khao Yai has enough away from the course to fill the mornings, and plenty for the afternoons you spend together.

How many rounds should we book in Khao Yai?

Three or four over ten nights if one of you does not play, or four to five if you both do. Golf every other morning keeps it a holiday rather than a golf tour with a companion attached.

Can a non-golfer ride along in the cart?

At most Thai courses, yes — but nearly all charge a cart or follower fee for it, and some add a caddie charge too. Ask when you book. Plenty of partners prefer the clubhouse and the spa to five hours in the heat, so do not assume it is wanted.

What does a couples golf trip to Khao Yai cost?

For ten nights with four rounds for one golfer, roughly £1,400 to £2,600 per person excluding flights, depending on hotel standard. Green fees average ฿2,320 in low season and ฿3,249 in high season, plus a compulsory caddie around ฿450 a round and a cash tip of ฿400 to ฿500.
